ShipTech Registrants,
The leadership of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has made the difficult decision to cancel the biennial ShipTech 2020 conference. This judgement was made because of the increased national concerns about the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19. The conference was scheduled to take place on 26-27 March 2020 in Charleston, SC.
Over the past two weeks, ONR leaders have constantly monitored communications from the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding health risks related to COVID-19. In addition, during the past week, a number of ONR’s partners and several confirmed speakers have canceled their participation because of travel restrictions.
Bottom line, given the current circumstances, we believe this decision is the responsible action in order to protect you, our members and partners, as well as your families and communities, and to ensure the quality of ShipTech.
We sincerely regret this cancellation and apologize for any inconvenience it may cause you. Please review your airline’s cancellation policies for booked flights. ONR is recommending that you call to cancel lodging arrangements as soon as possible to avoid cancellation fees and/or room charges. Lodging arrangements secured at the host hotel, Charleston Marriott (843-723-3000) or other area hotels will need to be cancelled 72 hours before your scheduled arrival date to avoid charges. We highly recommend at that time of cancellation, that you obtain a cancellation number for your records from the reservationist.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we work through the next steps. Please visit the official ShipTech 2020 site and monitor your email for updates on how we intend to facilitate technology transition for abstracts selected for the ShipTech technical session.
Sincerely,
John U. Carney
Director, Navy ManTech Program

ShipTech 2020 is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research’s (ONR’s) Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) Program. The two-day event targets the domestic shipbuilding industry, its supplier base, U.S. Navy Program Offices, and Navy-sponsored shipbuilding research programs. A forum to exchange information on the developments generated by Navy ManTech through its Centers of Excellence, as well as the related initiatives conducted by the National Shipbuilding Research Program, industry, and academia, the conference mission is to reduce acquisition and total ownership costs of naval ships, accelerate the delivery of capabilities to the warfighter, and enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. shipbuilding industry.
Rear Adm. David J. Hahn, Chief of Naval Research, will serve as a keynote speaker for ShipTech 2020. Speakers will address:
- the gaps in technology on the acquisition side
- the role S&T plays in supporting acquisition
- how to accelerate capabilities to the warfighter
- total ownership cost and its impact on delivering the number of ships to the fleet that the Navy needs.
Technical sessions will focus on innovative systems, processes, and technologies that improve U.S. ship manufacturing and repair processes, reduce total ownership cost, and accelerate the delivery of capabilities to the warfighter.
