Target Audience: RN/LPN, RA/CNA, PT, PTA, OT, COTA, SLP, CM, SW, Neuropsychologists

Program Summary: This intermediate course is intended to provide application of BI rehab interventions into a multidisciplinary BI program .  Participants will learn how to assess patients for agitation, identify sequelae and target interventions to reduce behavioral symptoms, safety risks and improve overall functioning.  Participants will learn effective behavior management techniques including behavioral management treatment plans, behavioral rounds and response teams.  Implementation of alternatives to sitters (e.g., safety coach programs) will be discussed. 

Course Objectives

1.Explain model for behavior management within an inpatient rehabilitation hospital including assessment, treatment plans and behavior management rounds.
2.Illustrate interventions and strategies to contain agitation including verbal de-escalation and behavior response teams.
3.Examine psychosocial issues and individual risk factors that impact performance and long-term outcomes.
4.Provide an overview of neuroanatomy/pathophysiology and related brain injury sequelae across the continuum of care.
5.Examine assessment, education and intervention methods to address BI sequelae  across the continuum of care.
6.Explain the role of pharmacology in brain injury rehabilitation
7.Formulate a comprehensive, integrated model to improve functional outcomes, reduce caregiver burden, improve psychological adjustment and quality of life.
8.Assess patient safety techniques including enclosure beds, wander guards and alternatives to 1:1 sitters

Speech Language Pathology– This course is offered for .75 ASHA CEUs  (Intermediate level, XXXXX Related area). Partial Credit will not be offered for  this course.

OT - Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation is an approved provider for the American Occupational Therapy Association  (#4965) to offer continuing education in occupational therapy. This program awards occupational therapists .75 CEUs or 7.5 contact hours.
