About the Program

Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT) is an idiopathic postural deformity that becomes evident shortly after birth.  It is characterized by lateral flexion of the head to one side and cervical rotation to the opposite side.  Infants with CMT are often referred to physical therapy to treat the asymmetries in movement and position that are present.  This lecture and lab course will provide therapists with Clinical Practice Guidelines developed by the Pediatric Section of the American Physical Therapy Association. Types of infant torticollis and associated conditions will be discussed, evidenced-based examination and intervention strategies will be described, other therapeutic approaches and procedures as well as caregiver education and follow-up care will be examined.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify types and causes of infant torticollis
  • Discuss evidenced-based examination and intervention strategies for infants with CMT
  • Identify red flags that may warrant referral to a physician
  • Establish prognosis based on clinical findings
  • Identify therapeutic approaches to CMT
  • Examine intervention approaches that have not yet established efficacy
  • Explain evidenced-based discharge planning, caregiver education and recommendations for follow-up care
