This course is where safety, science, and psychology meet in a comfortable common ground. We cover data, structures, tools, and frameworks for patient safety, quality improvement, evidence based executive rounding, psychological safety, safety culture, teamwork, dealing with difficult colleagues, second victim of harm, and pacing change in sustainable ways. The Duke Patient Safety Center has provided this course since 2009, and internationaly, with a unique focus on the psychology and science behind problems, tools, and implementation. The result is a large and growing community of certified Duke Patient Safety Officers (full participation and a passing knowledge assessment score is required).
We provide tools and strategies for facilitating creativity, mindfulness, and resilience within a given clinical area, and use this protected time you have away from work to use the tools, strategize, and prepare for a return home with a plan. To date, a very valuable part of the experience for us has been the networking that takes plave between the Duke participants and the external participants. Participants come from a variety of backgrounds, including front-line health care workers with a safety-related role, physicians, safety officers, managers, directors and senior leaders from hospitals, long term care, home health, primary care and ambulatory setings. If you are looking for some tools and training to do what so far has been on-the-job training, this may be the course for you.
If you have safety culture data at the unit level, bring your own for use in the course - otherwise, deidentified data will be provided to you. Bring your problems, dirty laundry, and conundrums - we look forward to working with you.
The cost for this program covers the course, course materials, patient safety tools, lunches, snacks and coffee, certification, Duke continuing education credits, and access to archived presentations to facilitate bringing content home. The course is well recieved, 94% of participants would recommend this course to a friend, and 80% have started using the tools within a week of completing the course. We hope you can make it to Duke!
