"Enhancing Patient Safety for Patients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP): TeamSTEPPSR"

AHRQ will host a free 1-hour Web conference on October 8 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET on the use of the Agency’s teamwork training program, TeamSTEPPSR, and how to incorporate the tools and resources in a setting where patients with Limited English Proficiency are prevalent. Laura Maynard, MDiv, the Director of Collaborative Learning at the North Carolina Quality Center will discuss the following objectives:

1.  Highlight what we know about patient safety and LEP patients
2.  Identify common causes of adverse events for LEP and culturally diverse patients
3.  Present five key strategies for improving detection of medical errors and preventing high-risk scenarios from becoming safety events
4.  Provide an approach to preventing safety events through use of TeamSTEPPS tools

Research suggests that adverse events affect LEP patients more frequently, are often caused by communication problems, and are more likely to result in serious harm compared to those that affect English-speaking patients. Effective provider-patient communication is vital, especially in areas as critical as medication reconciliation, hospital discharge, informed consent, and surgical care. This presentation will provide evidence on the issue of patient safety for LEP and culturally diverse patients, including common causes and high-risk scenarios, and will demonstrate specific strategies and tools that healthcare teams, including interpreters, can use to improve patient safety for these vulnerable populations. Team behaviors that improve LEP patient safety are presented in a new TeamSTEPPS module: Enhancing Safety for Patients With Limited English Proficiency (TeamSTEPPS LEP module). This module applies an evidence based teamwork system to improve communication and reduce the number and severity of patient safety events affecting LEP and culturally diverse patients.
