TeamSTEPPS in Primary Care

About the Course
The TeamSTEPPS® in Primary Care Master Trainer Course is an Agency of Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) sponsored course that that offers techniquestools, and strategies to assist health care professionals in developing and optimizing team knowledge and performance in a primary care setting.

The course is intended for Practice Facilitators -- individuals who play a key role in helping practices implement team-based training programs by redesigning workflow, clarifying roles, and establishing effective means of communication to strengthen team approaches to care. A Change Team will also be identified for the effort. The Change Team should be a multi-disciplinary group within the organization that is committed to changing the current culture. These individuals will support the Practice Facilitator's work in implementing TeamSTEPPS.

This course will consist of a hybrid (online and in-person) cohort-based program. Upon successful completion of the course, a Practice Facilitator will receive 1.3 CEUs.

Course Outline
This hybrid program is intended to be completed over the course of a calendar month. The first few course components are completed virtually during the first few weeks of the month. Successful completion of the overall course then requires attendance at a one-day, onsite training in Chicago that takes place at the end of the month. An outline of the course components is provided below:
  1. Onboarding Webinar: 1-hour introductory webinar to the Practice Facilitator's cohort and the course curriculum.
  2. Fundamentals Course: 3 online modules that teach the core TeamSTEPPS tools and strategies. The Practice Facilitator and his/her Change Team view these and use the information from the modules to complete debrief worksheets.
  3. On-site Training: 1-day onsite training that will take place at the American Hospital Association offices in Chicago, IL. Only the Practice Facilitator (not the Change Team) will attend this portion of the course. Several instructional modules will be covered, including a focus on coaching staff on the use of teamwork tools and strategies in the practice setting.
  4. Sustainment: Post-training opportunities are offered for Practice Facilitators to engage with other Practice Facilitators and Improvement Advisors.
