Michigan Community Health Worker (MiCHWA) CHW Training Certificate - Virtual
What: Corewell Health West Healthier Communities is partnering with Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) to provide the Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance (MiCHWA) standardized curriculum for the State of Michigan. Upon completion, the student will receive a certificate from MiCHWA and will become MiCHWA-Certified.
Competencies covered include:
CHW role in public health and health systems
Legal and ethical responsibilities
Navigating community resources
Communication styles and cultural responsiveness
Teaching and capacity building skills
Coordination, documentation and reporting
Healthy lifestyles
Behavioral health and substance use disorder
To obtain the certificate, all class content must be completed with an 80% passing grade for each competency. Time outside of class for homework assignments is approximately 2 hours per week. Total course hours are 126 (plus 40 internship hours if not currently employed as a CHW).
Who should attend:
New and current CHWs that have not received a certificate.
Training pre-requisites:
High school diploma or GED
Good oral and written communication skills
Basic computer skills
If not currently working as a CHW or in a CHW-related role:
Interview with the instructor
Independent internship in a community setting

Monday, March 4, 2024 from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

CHW Course Classes
Tuesdays, March 5, 2024 - June 25, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Virtual classes will be held via Microsoft Teams by Corewell Health West Healthier Communities
Graduation Thursday, June 27, 2024 from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Registration Fee: Registration fee will depend on grant funding. The MiCHWA CHW Membership/Registry fee of $50 per participant for the first year is included in the registration cost. When training is completed, all participants will have access to the MiCHWA CHW Registry and successful participants will be automatically eligible for MiCHWA CHW Certification.
Payment: Corewell Health Healthier Communities will determine eligibility for grant funds. Those who are not eligible for grant funding, an invoice will be emailed to the supervisor's email address you have entered or your personal email address if not currently employed.
Refund Disclaimer: Full refunds are available until February 26, 2024. Partial refunds of 50% are available until February 28, 2024. Students who attend any portion of the course will NOT be eligible for a refund.
