This presentation is applicable for both professionals and parents. It will focus on the needs and effective management of language-delayed learners to achieve catch-up growth. The presentation will address the roles and responsibilities of team members - as well, as how to develop and implement plans for accelerated progress. Case study approach and video analyses are used throughout the session. Participants will have access to a variety of resources and tools to support intervention with language-delayed children who are deaf or hard of hearing.  

Learner outcomes:
  1. Learners will summarize the research supporting the major predictors of reading, literacy, and academic achievement.
  2. Learners will describe the reasons a child might get a late start to LSL or need catch up growth.
  3. Learners will demonstrate effective planning, and programming to promote accelerated progress for language-delayed learners.
  4. Learners will list a variety of tools and resources for effective management of language-delayed learners.
  5. Learners will apply the concept of “stage – not age” in developing a long-term plan.
  6. Learners will discuss the roles and responsibilities of team members.

Speaker information
Kathryn Wilson Linder M.A., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT is a speech-language pathologist, teacher of the deaf and Auditory-Verbal therapist, with more than 40 years of experience as an educator, therapist, and consultant in public school, private practice, home-based, and clinical settings. From 2014 until 2018, Kathryn held the position of Coaching and Mentoring Leader for Hearing First. This followed a position as Director of FIRST YEARS at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Kathryn is a founding member of the American Cochlear Implant Alliance, has been a member of the Coordinating Committee for the American Speech and Hearing Association Special Interest Group, Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Childhood and has served on the Board of Directors for The CARE Project. Kathryn has contributed to the professional literature as an author of several articles on a variety of topics. She provides professional learning opportunities both nationally and internationally and mentors professionals pursuing certification in Listening and Spoken Language practice.

Beth Walker Wooten, M.Ed., C.E.D., LSLS Cert. AVT been teaching and learning from children with hearing loss and their parents for over 35 years, working in schools, clinics, homes, and through tele-intervention. She has used a variety of approaches including Auditory-Verbal, Oral, Cued Speech, and Total Communication. She has trained, supervised, and mentored speech and hearing professionals in public and private settings, and as a college-level instructor. She has served as educational consultant to numerous programs in the U.S. and abroad. She is currently a practicing Listening and Spoken Language Specialist/Auditory-Verbal therapist and educational consultant in private practice. She enjoys serving as the coordinator of Hearing First’s Professional Learning Community and as a mentor for Hearing First.  She lives with her husband and four sons, two with hearing loss, in a testosterone cloud in Alabama.
