About the Program
This 2.5 continuing education credits course fulfills the mandatory New Jersey ethics requirement for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. Physical therapists and physical therapists assistants are required to make ethical decisions every day while treating patients. This course is designed to provide licensed physical therapist and physical therapist assistants guidance in ethical decision making and provide resources to help guide PTs and PTAs through the decision making process. This course will include facilitated discussion among participants regarding ethical practice and decision making in the physical therapy environment. Participants will discuss ethics in regards to how challenges present themselves in the realm of everyday physical therapy practice in a variety of settings and understand any nuances to ethics in health care versus other business settings. Learning different methods in how to handle ethical cases will also be discussed. Participants will then apply those principles presented to a variety of case scenarios.

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the stages of professional maturity in judgement and moral agency
  • Discuss topics of relevant content to review for moral & ethical development
  • Discuss ethical concepts, principles and standards and apply to ethical cases
  • Recognize an ethical situation
  • Utilize the APTA Code of Ethics and Standards of Ethical Conduct for the PTA in resolving ethical decisions
  • Evaluate the effect of unethical practice on the patient
  • Articulate the importance of ethical practice on the profession
  • Refer to the NJ State Rules and Regulations to guide in making medical-legal decisions

About the Speaker
Beth Sarfaty, PT, MBA graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University and was awarded a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Management from Regis University.  She currently serves as the Vice President of Rehabilitation Services for Select Medical’s Long-Term Acute Care Hospital division. Beth was appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners in January 2012 where she serves as Chairperson for the Board.

Registration Information
Course Fee: $75.00
Registration deadline is June 26, 2019. Refunds, minus a $25.00 processing fee will be granted up to June 26, 2019. No refunds will be awarded after June 26, 2019. Participant substitutions are permitted with prior notice.
