WHAT
The Naval Opportunity Awareness Workshop (OAW) is the Department of Navy’s (DoN) Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) Program’s premier event for outreach and engagement of Minority-Serving Institutions.  This year, the OAW will be held August 30 – 31 on the campus of Clark Atlanta University (CAU) in the Bishop Cornelius L. Henderson Student Center.  A special workshop geared specifically toward students will be held on Wednesday, August  29 in the Thomas W. Cole Research Center.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the workshop is to provide HBCUs and MIs with first-hand information about opportunities available for faculty and students at the Naval Lab, Naval Warfare Centers, and Naval agencies.  In addition to expanding awareness of opportunities, the OAW is strategically structured to encourage direct interaction between HBCU/MI students, faculty, and administrators and Program Directors, Managers, and Coordinators across the Naval Research Enterprise (NRE).  At its core, the OAW provides a firm platform for productive exchanges and recruitment for Naval internships and fellowships.  A major objective of the workshop is to increase the number of HBCU/MI faculty and students participating in DoN professional enrichment programs and to maximize the competitiveness of white papers and proposals submitted by Minority-Serving Institutions.

During the 2-day OAW, DoN Program Directors, Managers, and Coordinators will present information about their specific programs. Workshop topics will include, but are not limited to:
• How to effectively write white papers and proposals  when responding to DoD, DoN, and ONR funding opportunity announcements (FOA) and broad area announcements (BAA's)
• Faculty and student internships and fellowship opportunities available at the Naval Lab, Naval Warfare Centers, and Naval Agencies
• Opportunities for collaborative research
• Current DoN research priorities and focus areas
