Covers the basics as well as common mistakes in academic CVs and cover letters.

Summer Quarter (June 17 – August 5, 2015)
4:15 – 5:15pm Wednesdays, NOTE: June 17 and August 5 sessions will last until 5:45pm with 30 minute reception after course session.

INDE 231A is an 8 week course centered around a series of panels, workshops, exercises, and discussions to provide practical, hands-on preparation for Bioscience PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and research/clinical trainees ready to apply to academic positions. It not only previews the academic hiring process, including tips from experienced faculty from different types of institutions, but also guides participants in the preparation and polishing of their application materials for success on the job market.
Trainees may attend the class formally by auditing or registering or by a drop-in basis. However, the final course session will be limited solely to those who register or audit. Links to individual registrations
Course Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will
  • Have a deeper understanding of the academic hiring process, including insider tips and how hiring committees select candidates.
  • Develop polished CVs, cover letters, research statements, and teaching statements that convey their fit to their academic career of choice, and receive individual feedback to improve their materials and candidacy. 
  • Have a cohort of peers and faculty mentors to assist and support one another during the academic hiring process and beyond.
