Workshop: HHMI’s Free Resources for Creating Engaging, Scientifically Rigorous, Student-Centered Biology
Target audience: Instructors of introductory-level Biology, Cell/Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Genetics.
 
Participants will:
  • Become familiar with free, high quality classroom resources from HHMI BioInteractive (www.biointeractive.org)
  • Experience student-centered classroom activities as learners
  • Reflect on practice and explore strategies to promote active learning in the undergraduate classroom
1:00-1:15 Introductions
1:15-2:45 Natural Selection of Coat Color in Mice: We will model how to help students integrate key concepts from molecular biology, cell signaling, and evolutionary biology to explain a real-world case of natural selection.
2:45-3:00 Break
3:00-3:45 Molecular Genetics of Cancer: Explore hands-on activities that help students use authentic data to build a better understanding of the molecular genetics of Cancer.
3:45-4:00 Wrap up and feedback
 
*The workshop will be preceeded by an optional lunch with postdoctoral fellows interested in teaching in biological fields, 12-1pm.
