Summary
Each year, an estimated 2.8 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury and face a wide range of physical, functional, emotional and social challenges. This course will focus on the importance of an individual’s overall health and wellness in rehabilitation and recovery. Topics will include personal identity, cognition and memory, maintaining relationships and the capacity to return to fitness and other physical activities.

 
Objectives
  • Identify brain injury as a chronic condition
  • Define the role of a dedicated physiatrist in the trauma unit and the benefits of acute medical rehabilitation
  • Analyze the challenges of re-establishing personal identity and the impact on personal relationships
  • Assess the impact of cognition and memory on recovery and quality of life for the person with brain injury
  • Describe how body mass index (BMI) affects recovery and rehabilitation outcomes

Program Information
Physical Therapy: An application has been submitted to the New Jersey State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for 2.5 continuing education credits.
Speech-Language Pathologists: Speech-Language Pathologists will receive .25 ASHA CEU’s or 2.5 contact hours.
Partial credit will NOT be awarded to SLPs.
The Inpatient Rehabilitation Division is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Accredited status does not imply endorsement by Kessler, the Inpatient Rehabilitation Division or ANCC of any commercial products or services.
Certificates will be awarded to the participants who attend the conference, submit completed evaluation forms and sign daily attendance rosters to verify attendance. The number of credits for continuing education (CEs) awarded will be based upon the number of conference hours attended and the requirements of the specific accreditation body.
Certificates: All certificates will be distributed at the conclusion of the program, provided all information is completed during registration; otherwise certificates will be mailed out to the participants.

Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation is an approved provider (#4965) for the American Occupational Therapy Association to offer continuing education in occupational therapy. This program awards occupational therapists 0.25 CEUs or 2.5 contact hours. The assignment of AOTA CEUs does not imply endorsement of specific course content, products, or clinical procedures by AOTA.
