Program Summary
This introductory course provides an overview of an interdisciplinary Brain Injury (BI) program in an accute rehabilitation setting.  Through e-learning, participants will gain an understanding of BI sequelae through targeted assessment and interventions to maximize funcational outcomes.


Course Objectives
Anatomy of Brain Injury:  Connecting Injury to Function

1.  Identify the basic structures of the brain within the skull including the meningeal layers.
2.  Differentiate between the two hemispheres and the lobes of the brain.
3.  Recall the organization of the brain from simple to complex.
4.  Differentiate between traumatic and non-traumatic brain injuries and types of hemorrhages.
5.  Recall primary, secondary, and tertiary events after brain injury.

Functional Neuroanatomy:  How the Structures Lead to Function or Dysfunction?
1.  Identify the hierarchy of cognition and how each level impacts function.
2.  Define perception and related changes after brain injury.
3.  Identify at least three deficits that can occur after brain injury.

Clinical Assessment Tools of Brain Injury
1. Recall prognostic indicators in the course of recovery.
2. Identify stage of recovery using the Ranchos Los Amigos Scale.
3. Describe the Glasgow Coma Scale.
4. Identify classifications of consciousness and methods to assess.

Interventions for Neurocognitive and Neurobehavioral Sequelae of Brain Injury
1. Identify common neurobehavioral, cognitive, and physical sequelae following brain injury.
2. Identify strategies for managing the cognitive and behavioral sequelae of brain injury.
3. Recall the role of the interdisciplinary team in the discharge planning process and reintegration into the community setting.

Requirements for successful completion:
Successful completion requires that the learner view all four (4) courses of the curriculum. The learner must complete all associated quizzes, complete the course exam with a minimum score of 80% and complete the curriculum evaluation. Upon successful completion of this activity, the learner will be issued or awarded a CE certificate. No partial credits will be awarded for this activity.
