Program Summary:

This 1 hour course will provide an in-depth review of the “Guidelines for Adult Stroke Rehabilitation and Recovery” by the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association with a focus on post-acute care recommendations.  Rehabilitation goals and interventions will be discussed as mitigating the effects of activity and participation limitations for stroke survivors maximizing functional outcomes.


Objectives:

  1. Identify a comprehensive peer-reviewed resource for healthcare providers on the post-acute care of a stroke survivor
  2. Describe advantages and disadvantages of common post-acute care rehabilitation settings for stroke survivors
  3. Identify determining factors for discharge destination for acute stroke patients 
  4. Discuss the development of stroke systems of care and identify the role that acute rehabilitation can take in mitigating the effects of stroke on society

Bio:
Wendy Bunting, MS, CCC-SLP, is the Director of Rehabilitation at Riverside Rehabilitation Hospital and oversees the physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and therapeutic recreation programs. She has been involved in rehab management for the last 12 years and has focused on adjusting operations to match changing regulations and industry pressures while optimizing quality and safety. Wendy has 18 years of experience as a medical Speech-Language Pathologist working with adults with cognitive, communication and swallowing disorders. For the last several years, Wendy has been involved with the Virginia Stroke Systems Task Force which addresses access to optimal care for stroke survivors across the state.

Education:
Target Audience:  Any clinician that provides care or coordinates services for stroke patients (RN, PT, OT, SLP)


RN:  This course designates up to 1.0 contact hours for nurses.

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Division is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Centers commission on Accreditation.

Accredited status does not imply endorsement by the Inpatient Rehabilitation Division or ANCC of any commercial products or services.

There is no commercial support for this activity.

Requirements for successful completion: Participants must sign in and out and complete a program evaluation.

PT: An application for 1.0 contact hours has been submitted to the Physical Therapy Board of Virginia.
OT:  This course qualifies for 1.0 contact hours.
SLP: This course if offered for 1.0 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Related area).
